As part of textiles and building services, furniture, textiles are not merely decorative adjuncts, but play a key architectural role in public spaces. In the built environment textile becomes a more extensive and prominent presence.

In some parts of Africa, young people are now wearing leather trousers. In rural areas, they are increasingly using a woven or a plaited design as a means of expressing the importance or status they possess in the society where they live.
